A PROPHETIC RESPONSE OF WOMEN RELIGIOUS

Abstract

The prophetic response is the reading of a social situation in the light of God’s will and purpose. Jesus’ prophetic role is directed towards people, to liberate and empower them. He helps people to be free of their oppressive forces so that they can pursue their lives with dignity. The living of the religious state of life is in itself a prophetic response to the people of our time. All the more, the legal education prepares women religious to practice the justice ministry in the spirit of public service, as a means of freeing human beings, enabling them to grow as humans and to ensure that law works for the good of all, especially for women, children and poor, thereby creating truly an equitable society. Law gives direction and instruction. As direction, it is a call to move forward; as instruction it shows which the right direction is. Hence the women religious who have acquired legal education are called to be knowledgeable (professional excellence) and just (moral excellence). Both professional and moral excellence must go together and that is the challenge for women religious in justice ministry.

Julie George SSpS, Streevani

Sr Julie George, SSpS is a Women’s Rights Lawyer who belongs to the Congregation of Missionary Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit. Currently she is the director of Streevani, Pune. She holds a Masters Degree in Law with specialization in Human Rights and Family Law and has a diploma in theology. She has been helping women in the Court of Law, and has published articles on gender justice. julierosegeorge@gmail.com.
