Abstract

The Bible occupies a very important place in the world's literature. It is a book written by ordinary humans who lived in actual historical times. Strictly speaking the Bible is not ' 'a book", but a whole library of books written over a span of over 1000 years by many different writers with a variety of individual styles, charaèteristics as well as theological purposes. St. Jerome calls it "a Divine Library."l The Bible is humanity's common heritage. Moreover, both the Jews and Christians believe that the Bible is the Word of God. They hold that it is the written record of God's progressive revelation of Himself to his chosen people and at the same time the record of their various respones to God's self-revelation. This self-revelation of God and human response to it are expressed both in words and deeds in the Bible. It is in history that God reveals himself and man responds to him.
