Abstract

In spite of the scathing criticism of classical metaphysics, and the much acclaimed "end of metaphysics," the twentieth century also witnessed a renewed interest in metaphysics. Especially through the works of Alfred North Whitehead (1861-1947) and Charles Hartshorne (1897 -), a new, thoroughly modem system evolved, which in its scope and depth rivals the so-called philosophia perennis. Among the most outstanding intellectual achievements of the century has been the creation of a 'process' alternative to the metaphysics and philosophical theology of our classical tradition. As Wolfhart Pannenberg rightly acknowledges, process philosophy is "this century's most significant contribution to metaphysics.
