Abstract

When the Booker Prize Committee selected The God of Small Things' of Arundhati Roy in October 1997, there arose a flood of comments about the merits and demerits of this unique creation by a South Indian woman. While some lavished praises on it, others found nothing in it except that it is a palatable mixture of erotic descriptions as well as unwanted criticism of
politics. Without going into the intriguing literary characteristics of this book, what impressed me most was the commitment of the author to deal with the small things of life as constituting the major fabric of human life in oursociety.
