Abstract

The pre and the post independent period of India witnessed the emergence of several religios movements. The basic questions underlying the present inquiry into this social phenomenon are the following. Are these religious movements mereley the xpression of religious sentiments of the epoch or are they also the product of interplay of forces in the socio-economic, political and cultural spheres?
