The implication of the Mandir — Masjid conflict to the new India that has been emerging slowly but steadily for over four decades is ominous to say the feast. India, even in its present truncated form, resulting from the partition, is a multi-religious, multi-cultural, pluralistic society. All major religions of the world are strongly present in this country, though the vast majority of the population is Hindu. After the traumatic experience following the partition and independence, the country was able to frame a democratic constitution dedicated to pluralism and secularism. The country and its constitution are unhesitatingly committed to the principles of freedom, equality and rule of law. Considering the enormity of the problems to be resolved one should not have much difficulty in saying that it has been a successful experiment so far, though India has to go a long way to be a healthy and vibrant democracy. There are still major problems to be resolved on various fronts.
