Abstract

One of the general assumptions that underlies the different philosophies of language in the 'ãstika 'l tradition is that šabda is eternal. What they mean to say is that while natural languages are subject to both growth and development, language in the primary sense of 'abda is 'eternal. This idea, tacitly accepted in most of the philosophies, indeed, is as old as the Vedas.
