Kuriakose Elias Chavara: A Harbinger of Bridging Faith, Justice and Humanity

Abstract

Kuriakose Elias Chavara was a visionary whose life and mission exemplified the harmonious integration of faith, justice and humanity. His contributions transcended the boundaries of religion, inspiring transformative change in education, social justice, and spiritual renewal. His early exposure to socio-economic inequality influenced Chavara’s determination to combat structural injustices and support the underprivileged. One of Chavara’s greatest accomplishments was his innovative contribution to education where he promoted comprehensive education at a time when caste and class barriers restricted the access to education by founding the first Catholic school in Mannanam, and mandating every church to have a school of its own.
